Protests across Los Angeles began as peaceful demonstrations, but by about 6:30 p.m., things began to unravel

Many demonstrators held signs reading, “I can’t breathe,” a statement uttered by Floyd as he pleaded for his life as police officers in Minneapolis kneeled on his neck. But after a couple of hours, Los Angeles Police were forced to declare an unlawful assembly as protesters took to the 110 Freeway, and began to vandalize squad cars.

Two officers sustained minor injuries, and at least 400 arrests were made.

Police set off fireworks to force people to leave and by 9:30 p.m. demonstrators were told to leave the areas between the 10 Freeway and 101 Freeway, and 110 Freeway and Alameda Street.

“This declaration is being made following repeated acts of violence and property damage,” the department said in a statement. “Residents should stay inside.  Business should close.  Persons on street are to leave area.”
