UPDATE - The trade between the Patriots and Lions to send Detroit tight end Michael Roberts to New England is dead. Roberts reportedly failed his physical.

The trade was initially for a conditional 2020 seventh-round pick, but the Lions announced Friday that the deal was rescinded because conditions weren't met. The Lions then waived Roberts.

The Patriots have added to their tight ends depth.

According to multiple reports, the team has acquired tight end Michael Roberts in a trade with the Lions. Justin Rogers adds it is for a future, late-round pick.

Roberts was a fourth-round pick in 2017, but struggled to stay on the field due to injuries. In eight games last year, he caught nine passes for 100 yards and three touchdowns, but is known for his blocking.

The Patriots now have a tight end depth chart of Ben Watson (suspended four games), Matt LaCosse, Roberts, Stephen Anderson, Ryan Izzo and Andrew Beck as they look to replace star tight end Rob Gronkowski, who announced his retirement in March.
