Two Los Angeles Police Department officers were detained Sunday after a third officer was shot and injured near Apple Valley in San Bernadino County.

According to the San Bernadino Sheriff's Department, LAPD Officer Ismael Tamayo, 44, was arrested for attempted murder and booked at High Desert Detention Center.

The wounded officer was shot in his shoulder and was airlifted to a trauma center where he is expected to recover.

The three officers were camping in the Stoddard Wells off-highway-vehicle area late Saturday, NBC Los Angeles reports

Both the wounded officer and the officer who fired the shot are assigned to the LAPD's Newton Division.

LAPD Chief Michel Moore said in a statement, "The events overnight culminating in the serious injury of our off-duty officer, apparently at the hands of another member of this Department, give me great concern."

He continued, "I spoke earlier this morning with San Bernardino Sheriff John McMahon, pledging our full support of their criminal investigation. I am thankful our injured officer is in stable condition and expected to survive. I am committed to determining what and how this occurred."

Tamayo has been relieved of his duties while the department awaits the outcome of the criminal investigation.
