No. 5 seed Auburn appeared to have its NCAA Tournament first-round game against No. 12 New Mexico State on Thursday afternoon in hand, holding several double-digit leads in the second half.

But the Tigers had a true meltdown in the final minutes: turnovers, bad fouls, missed free throws, the works.

New Mexico State wasn't much better, contributing to a frantic atmosphere in Salt Lake City as the Aggies whittled their deficit to one point in the final minute.

Auburn was up by two when New Mexico State got the ball back with six seconds left. That produced this mind-blowing decision to pass up a wide-open layup that would have tied the game for a 3-point try ... and drew a shooting foul from Auburn.

But New Mexico State agonizingly missed two of the three free throws then missed an open 3 at the buzzer to let Auburn escape.
