A young girl battling cancer is continuing her giving spirit, by raising tens of thousands of dollars for pediatric cancer research.

Our KNX "Hero of the Week" is a 7 year-old from Orange County, who's making special bracelets to make a difference.

A few months ago, Lynden Smith was diagnosed with stage-three cancer.

"Right after her 7th birthday is when we kind of noticed a little spot on her back," says Amanda Smith, Lynden's mother. "We just thought it was a pimple at first. And then we just kept taking her into the doctor. Pathology called us on July 9th, and said it was cancer."

Lynden was diagnosed with ALCL, anaplastic large cell lymphoma. She's currently finishing six weeks of treatment.

"They did a scan a few weeks ago, and they actually found that there is no visible cancer," says Amanda. "So, we'll be able to go back to school, and do normal 7 year-old stuff!"

Amanda says Lynden is always thinking of others. A year ago, before her cancer diagnosis, she donated her hair.

"We were watching American Ninja Warrior, and there was a little girl on there with no hair. We explained to her that she had cancer. And I said 'sometimes, people will cut off their hair and donate it, so they can make wigs.' And she said 'Oh, I want to do that.' And, so we took her (Lynden) into the salon. And we gave it to Crowns of Courage. And we've actually worked really closely with them, and they have given us a wig, since then."

Lynden and her mom Amanda recently came up with an idea to make special bracelets, to support pediatric cancer research. "We thought maybe we'd sell like, twenty-five, maybe fifty. And it just kind of took off," says Amanda. "It's been really amazing to see the support from all of the people, all over the world."

I spoke with Lynden during one of her treatment sessions, about the bracelet's special name.

"Lynden's Lotus," says Lynden.

"Lynden's Lotus. Isn't that a flower?" I asked.

"Yeah," said Lynden.

"Is it one of your favorite flowers?" I asked.

"Yeah," replied Lynden.

Lynden's Lotus bracelets have already raised over $30,000. All of the proceeds are going to the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation, based in Irvine.

Executive Director Jeri Wilson says Lynden's spirit has connected with thousands of people. "Because of the power of this little girl, they are buying a bracelet, and they're funding cancer research. I am in amazement when I sit with her," says Jeri.

"You forget what she is having to put her body through!"

She is such a remarkable young girl.

We are honoring 7 year-old Lynden Smith and her parents Dan and Amanda, as our KNX heroes of the week!  KNX Heroes is presented by California Resources Corporation, saluting our military veterans, and all of our heroes!
