A dog owner was left in shock after during a walk on the beach turned into a nightmare. A man came from behind her and without provocation, kicked her dog, Sophie, 15 feet into the air.

Port Hueneme Police responded Friday around 2 pm to reports of a homeless man fighting with lifeguards.

Police tracked down Dylan McTaggert, a homeless man from Oxnard, and arrested and charged him with kicking the dog.

According to police, Sophie was “kicked with so much force, she was diagnosed with having a collapsed lung and displaced heart.”

Although Sophie is at home resting, her vet bills are climbing fast, and a GoFundMe page has been launched to help her owner with the growing cost.

“She’s my kid so it’s been really really hard,” the dog’s unidentified owner said, according to CBSLA. “Friday was bad, Saturday was bad. It took 24 hours before she recognized us… She’s wagged her tail a few times so it’s pretty exciting.”

McTaggert was booked and later transported to the Ventura County Jail for fighting in public, assault on a lifeguard, and felony animal cruelty. He is currently scheduled for arraignment tomorrow at the Ventura County Government Center where he is being held in custody in lieu of $25,000 bail.

Moving forward, the Port Hueneme Police Department will have an officer assigned to specifically patrol the beach area and to proactively contact individuals violating local, state, and federal laws. Calls for service involving transients disturbing at the beach and citywide have doubled from the previous year.
