KNX In-Depth: George Takei Compares Childhood in Japanese Internment Camps to Today's Migrant Detention Centers
Activist and actor George Takei stopped by KNX In-Depth to speak with hosts Mike Simpson and Charles Feldman about his recently released a graphic novel titled "They Called Us Enemy." It's about his time as a child living in a Japanese-American internment camp, he makes the comparison between President Trump's migrant detention centers on the U.S.-Mexico border and his own time in the internment camps.
"Seeking asylum is a human right," Takei said about the immigrants who come to the U.S. border. "Despite that, the orangutan in the White House calls them illegal. They're exercising their human right," he adds.
Takei was incarcerated along with 120,000 other Japanese-American citizens after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor during World War II.
"We were innocent Americans. We had nothing to do with Pearl Harbor," Takei says about his time in the internment camps.
Takei says he remains hopeful when it comes to the issues of immigration. He says when Trump signed the Muslim ban, for example, attorneys and the public came to the airports to protest his executive order. "We've made progress," Takei said.
