A Downey man has been charged with murder in the death of a 6-year-old boy the day after Christmas.

Prosecutors say 23-year-old Tyler D'Shaun Martin Brand severely beat the boy, who'd been left in his care over the holiday break. They say Dayvon Taylor, who died at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, was Brand's godson.

The boy's dad tells the Los Angeles Times he was told his son was spending time with a man known as “Coach Ty" and "was like, 'Who is this guy? Why is he spending time with my son?'"

An LA Unified spokeswoman says Brand worked as a program supervisor for the district's "Beyond the Bell" after-school program.

Normandie Elementary sent a message to parents about Brand's arrest in connection with the death of a student at the school.

It says Brand had worked as a supervisor in the after-school program there last summer.

The principal goes on to extend condolences to the boy's family and friends and is offering counseling to students "who may be impacted by this incident."

According to the District Attorney's Office, the boy was severely beaten, and he died at a hospital.

Brand, who was arrested Thursday night, faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted, according to the District Attorney's Office. Brand remains jailed in lieu of $2 million bail and is due to be arraigned this afternoon.
