Long Beach PD Busts Illegal Gambling Operation, Arresting 11

 LONG BEACH (CNS) - Vice detectives and SWAT officers conducted a pre- dawn raid today on an illegal gambling operation in Long Beach, arresting 11 suspects and seizing gambling machines, firearms, ammunition, drugs and cash.

A search warrant was served about 3:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Pacific Avenue.

"Detectives were first made aware of this location earlier this year and, through their investigation, were able to determine the location to be housing illegal gambling activity," according to a Long Beach Police Department statement.

Three illegal gambling machines, four firearms, ammunition, narcotics and about $5,000 in cash were confiscated, according to police, who said two stolen vehicles were also recovered at the location.

Arrested at the scene were:
   -- Channy Teng, 38, of Torrance, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held in lieu of $20,000 bail;
   -- Oscar Vasquez, 27, of Long Beach, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held without bail;
   -- Monserret Lopez, 37, of South Gate, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held without bail;
   -- Yvette Smith, 35, of San Pedro, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance and was being held without bail;
   -- Sokhom Nget, 38, of Artesia, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held without bail;
   -- Michael Johnson, 28, of Carson, who was booked on suspicion of unlawful possession of ammunition and was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail;
   -- Christian Yap, 38, of Carson, who was booked on suspicion of illegal possession of a firearm and was being held in lieu of $35,000 bail;
   -- Christopher Metz, 38, of Long Beach, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held in lieu of $50,000 bail;
   -- Anthony Newman, 34, of Long Beach, who was booked on four outstanding warrants and was being held in lieu of $125,000 bail;
   -- Danielle Leigh, 51, of Lakewood, who was booked on an outstanding warrant and was being held in lieu of $1,500 bail; and
   -- Thomas Rodriguez, 46, of Lomita, who was booked on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance for sale and was being held in lieu of $30,000 bail.

"In response to recent reports of illegal gambling activity taking place within the city, the Long Beach Police Department will be combining efforts with other city partners to reduce locations with illegal activity, especially targeting those where illegal gambling is taking place, both to improve quality of life and ensure the safety of our residents," police said.
