LOS ANGELES (CNS) - Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro was named today the recipient of the Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, which honors performers who foster the "finest ideals of the acting profession."

"Robert De Niro is an actor of extraordinary depth and ability," SAG- AFTRA President Gabrielle Carteris said in a statement. "The characters he creates captivate our imaginations. From the smoldering inferno of young Vito Corleone to the raging bull Jake LaMotta to everybody's grandpa Ben Whittaker, he continues to touch our hearts and open our minds to new and exciting worlds of understanding and emotion."

De Niro, 76, will receive the award during the 26th annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Jan. 19.

De Niro is a seven-time Oscar nominee, winning twice -- best actor for "Raging Bull" and best supporting actor for "The Godfather: Part II." He was nominated for his work in the films "Taxi Driver," "The Deer Hunter," "Awakenings," "Cape Fear" and "Silver Linings Playbook."

His other accolades include a Cecil B. DeMille Award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Previous SAG Life Achievement Award recipients include Morgan Freeman, Dick Van Dyke, Debbie Reynolds, Carol Burnett, James Earl Jones, Julie Andrews, Ed Asner, Sidney Poitier, Elizabeth Taylor, Kirk Douglas, Robert Redford, Audrey Hepburn, Jack Lemmon, and Paul Newman.
