BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) — Dense morning fog led to two multi-vehicle crashes Tuesday on a key highway in Serbia, leaving seven people dead and injuring 27 others, police said.

The crashes involved 34 cars and trucks and probably happened because of the fog, police said.

The collisions took place on both sides of the main north-south highway in central Serbia, 110 kilometers (66 miles) southeast of the capital, Belgrade. Serbian state TV said some victims were stuck in their crashed cars for a while until rescuers pulled them out. One reporter described utter "chaos" against a backdrop of smashed cars and trucks.

One unidentified truck driver told state TV that the fog was "dense as a wall."

"I stopped and got out of the truck and then cars started bumping," he said.

Initially, police said six people had died but the number rose to seven later in the day.

Traffic was halted in both directions amid the rescues and the crash investigation.
